Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Colossians3:23

Work a Burden or a Delight

If I were to ask, “Your work: is it a burden or a delight to you?” what would be your answer? My hope is that your answer would be “a delight”. But unfortunately, according to Forbes, some 40 percent of North Americans are unhappy at their jobs.

For the first five years of my working life I was part of that 40 percent: Monday mornings were most certainly not my favourite. Happily, that changed, and for more than 50 years—out of 60+—I loved my work and looked forward to Monday mornings.

What brought about the change? Was it a different job? No. The change came about when I became a Christian and began obeying God’s word: “Whatever your hand finds to do, work at it with all your might and do it as unto the Lord.” When I started giving my all—all my might—to my work, it did several things:

  • It produced a new sense of inner satisfaction; just knowing that I was doing my best gave me pride and happiness.
  • I became a more productive worker.
  • I experienced that a job well done has God’s blessing: I was noticed, appreciated, and promoted.
  • Monday mornings became something to be looked forward to instead of dreaded.

My changed attitude became a habit that stayed with me for most of the 60+ years spent in the labour force, 40 of these in my own business.

What does it take to get to where you can say, “Thank God for Monday morning too”?

  1. Make up your mind that you are done with complaining and half-hearted effort and that from now on you will give your all to whatever it is you’re currently engaged in.
  2. Ask for God’s help and blessing on this commitment to changed behaviour. You’ll need His help; you can’t do it alone.
  3. Share your decision with some people whose opinion and advice you value. Not sharing it with someone makes giving up too easy.
  4. Expect and accept that the change won’t be easy, that the going may get tough. Expecting & accepting this will help you hang in there.
  5. Don’t delay! Go for it now. A delay mostly becomes “I had good intentions.”
